On Halloween night, what should’ve been a fun, normal evening ended in heartbreak for the Meyers family. Seventeen-year-old Dameon “Baby D” Meyers Jr., a student at Lovejoy High School in Clayton County, was shot and killed while walking back to his car with his younger brother, Makai, after attending a football game. According to police, three masked gunmen confronted the brothers in the parking lot and demanded Dameon empty his pockets — then opened fire.

Makai, just 16, was shaken to the core. He says all three men pointed guns at Dameon before turning their attention to him, pistol-whipping him while his brother stood there. The horrifying moment left him scrambling — not for belongings, but for his brother’s life. He rushed over when Dameon fell, ripped off his shirt, found the gunshot wound, and started CPR. “I tried to do everything I could,” he later said.

Richmond County Sheriff’s Office generic, Augusta, Ga.

Dameon had a heart for others. His dad said they called him “Baby D” because he was his little junior, always lifting people up. He used to give free haircuts to seniors and cut hair for people experiencing homelessness — humble acts that showed he cared deeply.

His death has left his family devastated and demanding answers. Dameon Sr. still replays the moment he found out: it came over a FaceTime call from his younger son, Makai, saying, “Dameon just got shot.” The phone call remains raw, impossible to forget.

The spot where this all happened — the library parking lot on McDonough Road, which was being used as overflow for the game — has raised questions. Dameon’s father wonders why there weren’t more officers around that night, given how crowded the game would have been.

So far, no arrests have been made. Clayton County police say they’re investigating and looking for potential suspects. The family is asking anyone with information to come forward — they want justice, but more than that, they want the story of their son to be heard.

In the meantime, the community is grieving. A student who gave so much back — a kind soul with big dreams — is now gone, and his family is left to ask why.
