South Bend, Ind. — A quiet Monday afternoon on the northeast side of South Bend turned into tragedy when 17‑year‑old Malik Duncan was killed and two other teenagers were wounded in a shooting near Frances and Sorin streets just after 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5. Police were called to the scene after neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots echo through the snowy residential block.

When officers arrived, they found three young males with gunshot injuries. Duncan was gravely wounded and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. A 19‑year‑old man and a 16‑year‑old boy also suffered gunshot wounds but were listed in stable condition with non‑life‑threatening injuries.

Residents standing near the yellow police tape described hearing loud pops in quick succession and then watching as neighbors and first responders rushed to help. One nearby neighbor said the sound of gunfire was unmistakable and rattling, cutting through what had been a calm afternoon.

Police blocked off the area of North Frances Street, and investigators with the South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit combed through the scene for evidence. At this time, authorities have not released details on a suspect or suspects, and no arrests have been announced. They have asked anyone with information to reach out to Michiana Crime Stoppers.

The shooting has left many in the neighborhood shaken. Some recalled past incidents nearby and said Monday’s violence was a painful reminder of how quickly daily life can be upended. Others spoke quietly about their sorrow for Duncan’s family and the community’s struggle to process the loss of someone so young.

Local leaders have not yet commented publicly, but the incident adds to broader concerns about gun violence affecting young people in the area. Families and neighbors say they hope police will bring answers and justice quickly, and that long‑term efforts will be made to prevent similar violence.

As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, waiting for more information about what led to the shooting. Duncan’s death is a stark reminder of lives cut short and families forever changed by sudden violence.
