Charlotte, N.C. — Just after midnight early Sunday, a violent burst of gunfire along Interstate-77 near Remount Road left a young man dead and two others seriously wounded, authorities say. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department rushed to the scene after hospitals alerted them that shooting victims were arriving in the early hours of Jan. 11.

Police later identified the man who died as 20-year-old Trevohn Maleek Marshall. He was brought to Carolinas Medical Center Atrium Health Main with critical injuries and was pronounced dead after staff fought to save his life.

At nearly the same time, two other people wounded in the same shooting showed up at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center not far away, also with gunshot injuries. Both remain in serious condition, and police have not shared further details about their medical status.

Investigators believe the shooting happened on the busy north-south stretch of Interstate-77 near the Remount Road exit in west Charlotte. Officers secured the highway as evidence teams scanned the area, trying to piece together what led up to the violence. Traffic was disrupted as the scene was processed.

Detectives with the CMPD Homicide Unit are reviewing witness statements, physical evidence, and surveillance footage to understand how the incident unfolded. So far, no suspects have been publicly named, and police have not said whether the people involved knew each other before the shooting.

Officials stressed that shootings on major roadways are especially dangerous because of the risk to motorists and commuters. At a news briefing, a police representative said there’s no indication of a broader threat to the public, but the investigation remains active and many questions are still unanswered.

As the community processes the tragedy, officers expressed condolences to Marshall’s family and urged anyone with information to contact the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department or Crime Stoppers. Citizens with video or tips may be key to helping detectives trace the moments before the shooting.

Charlotte residents have watched too many nights begin with violence that ripples through families and neighborhoods. For now, Marshall’s loss serves as a stark reminder of how quickly life can change on a stretch of highway millions travel each year.
