A Michigan mother is calling her 3-year-old son a hero after he helped save her life when she collapsed from a seizure at home. Shantell Woods, who was recently diagnosed with epilepsy, had been experiencing more frequent seizures, but it was her son’s quick thinking on Thursday afternoon that made all the difference.
What Happened
While cooking at home on Thursday, Shantell Woods began to feel dizzy and decided to sit on the couch to rest. Shortly after, she had a seizure and lost consciousness. With no one else around, her 3-year-old son, Cody, quickly took action.
Cody, who had witnessed his mother experience seizures before, knew something wasn’t right. He grabbed Woods’ phone, unlocked it by holding it close to her face, and called Kaya, a family friend and neighbor, using FaceTime.
“I want to cry right now. He’s just my hero,” Woods said, overwhelmed with pride. “He’s just a smart kid. I’m proud.”
A Community’s Quick Response
When Kaya received the FaceTime call, she initially thought it came from Woods before she lost consciousness. However, she soon realized that it was Cody reaching out for help. “I realized something wasn’t right, so something told me to just hurry, jump up and come across the parking lot,” Kaya recalled.
Panicking but acting swiftly, Kaya called 911, getting Woods the medical attention she needed. Thanks to Cody’s actions, help arrived in time, and Shantell Woods was treated for her seizure.
Cody’s Heroic Act
Although Cody doesn’t turn 4 until next month, he already demonstrated a level of awareness and responsibility far beyond his years. His mother says this was not the first time he had witnessed her medical episodes, and his previous experiences helped him know what to do during this emergency.
“I was surprised but happy he knew what to do in that moment,” Kaya said, acknowledging the young boy’s quick thinking.
Community Support
Since the incident, the community has rallied around the family, celebrating Cody’s heroism. Local residents have promised the young boy free ice cream for the rest of the year as a gesture of appreciation.
To help with medical and living expenses following her epilepsy diagnosis, Woods has set up a GoFundMe campaign.
