Late Saturday evening, a 48-year-old man from Edcouch lost his life in a heartbreaking collision on FM 1015 north of Weslaco, Texas. The Texas Department of Public Safety says the man was hit by a northbound pickup truck and later died from his injuries at a local hospital.
It was about 6:21 p.m. on January 3 when the crash happened near Mile 13½ North Road, just outside of Weslaco city limits. According to DPS, a gray 2011 Chevrolet Silverado was headed north on FM 1015 when the man suddenly ran out into the road.
For reasons still under investigation, the pedestrian — later identified as Raul Palomin — ran into the path of the truck. The vehicle’s front right-side mirror struck him, and the driver immediately pulled over to help.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and rushed Palomin to McAllen Medical Hospital. Doctors tried to save him, but he succumbed to his injuries, authorities confirmed.
Friends and neighbors described Palomin as a familiar face in the Edcouch community. They say he was the kind of person who always stopped to chat, and his sudden passing has left many in shock. Several residents told reporters they hoped the investigation would bring answers.
The driver of the Silverado remained at the scene, cooperated with troopers and is not facing any charges at this time. DPS officials say impairment and speed do not appear to be factors, but the inquiry is ongoing.
This tragedy underscores a growing concern for pedestrian safety along rural stretches of FM 1015, where traffic flows fast and sidewalks are scarce. Local leaders say more attention may be needed to prevent similar losses in the future.
As the investigation continues, family members are planning a memorial to honor Palomin’s life, and friends are asking drivers in the area to stay alert and watch for people on foot well before dusk.
