A serious crash on Chester Pike in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, on Monday morning sent five people to the hospital and caused a gas line to rupture, according to police.

Chester Pike between Huron and Summit avenues is closed due to the crash, according to police. Prospect Park Police Chief Dave Madonna said he expects the road to reopen within the next couple of hours.

Police responded to Chester Pike near Summit Avenue around 10 a.m. for reports of a major crash.

Five people were injured in the crash, but their conditions are unknown at this time.

“[Conditions] still to be determined, but if you’re in the impact such as this, it’s going to have some serious injuries,” Madonna said.

Police have not revealed the exact details of what led to the crash, but they preliminarily believe reckless driving was involved.

Chopper 3 was over the crash scene, showing damage and debris from the crash all along Chester Pike.

One black car was mangled, with a white SUV appearing to have struck two parked vehicles, Chopper 3 shows. Another black vehicle was severely damaged and was on its side in front of a nearby building.

Madonna said one of the vehicles involved struck a nearby building and caused a gas line to rupture. The police chief described it as a “serious gas leak” that required immediate attention from the Prospect Park Fire Department.

The crash forced several businesses in the area to close for the day, including a clothing store called Rem De Trendy Fashion.

The owner of Rem De Trendy Fashion told CBS News Philadelphia that as soon as she got in, she saw her shop was in the middle of yellow police tape, and she had to close for the day.

Madonna said the road closures are impacting the entire community, its businesses and its schools.

“It’s our hope that we do a thorough, proper investigation but also get the street open as quickly as we can,” the police chief said.

    The investigation is ongoing.

Ed Specht and Madeleine Wright contributed to this report.
