It’s the kind of evening no family ever wants to live through: a familiar voice on the phone goes quiet, silence replaces laughter, and a name that once brought comfort now fills a police report. Tuesday night in Birmingham, that heartbreak became reality for the loved ones of Eddie Jemison, a 72-year-old man shot and killed after what authorities describe as a verbal argument in the Sherman Heights neighborhood.
Police were called about 6:20 p.m. to the 2800 block of Burrell Street after neighbors reported gunfire. When officers arrived, they found Jemison lying in the middle of the road with at least one gunshot wound. Emergency crews rushed him to the University of Alabama at Birmingham hospital, where staff later pronounced him dead.

Investigators say the shooting followed a confrontation between Jemison and another man in the street. What began as words escalated into violence so swiftly that people nearby were left stunned. Witnesses described a quiet street minutes before the dispute, and within moments it had become a crime scene.
Remarkably, the suspect stayed at the scene after the shots were fired. Birmingham Police took the man into custody almost immediately and began questioning him as detectives launched a homicide investigation. At last report, he was being held on a 48-hour felony extension at the Birmingham City Jail.
Police have not released the name of the suspect, nor have they confirmed whether Jemison and the man knew each other before Tuesday evening. Detectives are still piecing together how a dispute turned so tragically fatal and whether there was any history between the two.
For the Sherman Heights community, the shooting has stirred deep unease. Residents said Jemison was well known in the neighborhood — someone many recognized from morning walks or trips to the corner store. Losing him in such sudden, senseless violence has left neighbors grappling with grief and unanswered questions.
As of now, authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Birmingham Police Department’s Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers, which may offer rewards for tips that help clarify the events leading up to the shooting.
