A tragic incident unfolded in rural Pennsylvania on Thursday when a man ambushed two state troopers, resulting in serious injuries for the officers and the suspect’s death. The confrontation happened near Thompson around 11 a.m. and involved Troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins, who are now in stable condition after being hospitalized.

State Police Colonel Christopher Paris explained that the troopers were responding to a welfare check when they encountered gunfire upon arrival. “They were immediately fired upon and ambushed. They are very lucky to be alive,” Paris stated, emphasizing the dangerous nature of the situation.

In a display of bravery, one trooper was able to use a tourniquet on the other, while a third trooper assisted in their rescue effort. Governor Josh Shapiro praised the troopers, calling them heroes and highlighting Trooper Perechinsky’s quick actions that likely saved lives.

Local law enforcement confirmed the attacker was armed with a rifle and did not heed commands from the officers. Tragically, he was shot and killed during the exchange. This incident occurred about five miles north of Thompson, a quiet town that Erika Mills, a nearby resident, described as typically peaceful. She expressed her shock, noting, “This is a very, very quiet town. There has never been anything comparable.”

As investigations continue, it’s a sobering reminder of the risks law enforcement faces daily to protect our communities.
