A 22-year-old driver has been sentenced to over two years in prison after admitting to causing serious injury in a single-vehicle crash when he fell asleep at the wheel.

    What Happened:

Haron James, of Stokes Drive, Leicester, was sentenced to two years and two months in prison and disqualified from driving for over three years following a crash on November 4, 2024. The collision occurred when James, driving a white Mercedes Sprinter van, fell asleep behind the wheel while traveling back to Leicestershire from an exhibition in London.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., while driving westbound on the A14 between junctions 11 and 10 near Cranford, James’s van drifted onto the grass verge and crashed into a barrier. One of the passengers, who was in the rear of the van without a seat or seatbelt, was violently thrown into an internal metal panel, sustaining serious head and neck injuries. The victim was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

    Who Is Haron James:

Haron James, a 22-year-old from Leicester, had been driving for hours when the crash occurred. The court heard that James had worked a long shift of 13-14 hours and had consumed a can of Red Bull to stay alert. Despite feeling tired as he neared the end of his journey, he failed to stop for a break, which led to the accident.

James admitted to Northamptonshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit that he knew he was tired but chose not to pull over before the collision happened.

    Career and Consequences:

James, who had been entrusted with the safety of his passengers, ignored his fatigue, which led to devastating consequences. In addition to the prison sentence, James pleaded guilty to causing serious injury through dangerous driving. The court acknowledged the impact of his decision and his disregard for safety protocols, including allowing a third passenger to ride in the rear of the van without proper seating or seat belts.

Public Reaction and Road Safety Awareness:

The case has sparked renewed discussions about the dangers of driving while tired and the importance of wearing seatbelts. Detective Vicki Ballantyne, who worked on the investigation, emphasized the significance of taking breaks when driving long distances to prevent accidents. She also pointed out the fatal consequences of not wearing a seatbelt, highlighting that it could make the difference between life and death in a collision.

    What Happens Next:

The tragic crash serves as a reminder of the importance of taking breaks and ensuring that all passengers are safely secured during travel. Anyone concerned about road safety or witnessing a vehicle-related crime is encouraged to report it to Northamptonshire Police or Crimestoppers.

This incident is part of a broader effort to raise awareness about road safety, with the tragic reminder that in 2024, 31 people lost their lives in road accidents in Northamptonshire.
