In the mid-afternoon of Saturday, October 18, 2025, the city of Camden faced another tragic moment: 29-year-old Bruce Dixon was found unresponsive and suffering from gunshot wounds on the 1200 block of Morton Street. Officers from the Camden County Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter alert at around 1:50 p.m., and discovered Dixon on the sidewalk. He was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 2:04 p.m. in what prosecutors describe as a “senseless act of violence.”

The announcement came from Grace C. MacAulay, the Camden County Prosecutor, and Gabriel Rodriguez, Chief of the Camden County Police Department. While authorities confirmed Dixon’s identity and the basic facts, they have yet to release details about what led to the shooting or any potential suspects. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Residents of Morton Street and surrounding neighborhoods were shaken by the news. Neighbors say they heard commotion in the area prior to the police arrival, though exactly what preceded the gunfire remains unclear. Police investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage from nearby buildings and interviewing any witnesses who might have heard or seen something relevant. No arrests have been announced yet.

In a joint statement, prosecutors and police called on community members to come forward with any piece of information—even what may seem minor—to aid in their efforts. Detective Cody Skinner from the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit and Detective Brandon Bolger of the Camden County Police Department have been assigned to the case, and tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Camden.TIPS portal.

This incident has reignited concern around gun violence in Camden—a city that recently experienced what local officials called “our first homicide-free summer in over 50 years.” But this case underscores just how fragile that progress remains. Community leaders are again stressing the importance of cooperation between residents and law enforcement, and reminding people that public safety is a shared responsibility.

Friends and family of Bruce Dixon, though not publicly commenting in full, described him as a young man with promise whose life ended far too early. For many in the neighborhood, this shooting is another painful reminder: the ripple effects of violence extend far beyond the initial moment. The loss leaves deep emotional wounds in the community.

As the investigation continues, authorities say they hope to bring answers—and eventually justice—for Dixon’s loved ones. In the meantime, they urge those with knowledge to step forward, stressing that—even in a city working toward change—every person’s voice matters in solving these tragedies.
