Planned Parenthood Resumes Abortion Scheduling in Wisconsin
MADISON, Wis. – Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has started scheduling abortions again after a pause that lasted almost a month. The temporary stop was due to changes in how federal Medicaid funds are given out, which came about because of a new federal law.
The organization says that it can now schedule abortions because it no longer falls under the rules of the new federal law that would stop it from getting Medicaid money.
To keep getting funds, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has given up its status as an “essential community provider” under the Affordable Care Act. Leaders at Planned Parenthood say this change should not raise the cost of abortions or other services, nor will it affect the amount of money they get.
Tanya Atkinson, the head of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, stated that they don’t expect this change to greatly affect people’s ability to get services. However, they will watch closely to see if it impacts their finances.
Groups that support protecting unborn lives have criticized Planned Parenthood’s actions. They argue that taxpayer money should not support organizations that prioritize abortion. These groups believe that women in difficult situations deserve support that values life.
The pause in abortion services in Wisconsin meant that women who would have gone to Planned Parenthood clinics had to look for other options, like traveling to other states.
Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin serves around 50,000 people, with about 60% covered by Medicaid. The organization decided that continuing to receive Medicaid funds was important. They said giving up the “Essential Community Provider” status was the way to do that.
Wisconsin is part of a lawsuit against the federal law. A court said the government could stop payments while the lawsuit is ongoing.
Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin stated that it gave up its “essential community provider” status because they believe this would allow them to still receive Medicaid funds. The group says they will continue to offer a range of services.
