On the night of October 25 in a Memphis apartment, 26-year-old Corwyn Winfield is accused of sneaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and hiding in her bedroom closet. The woman was asleep in bed with her new boyfriend and her 5-year-old child when Winfield allegedly emerged with an AR-style rifle and threatened the couple.

The tension escalated almost instantly. According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Winfield stayed hidden until late into the night before bursting from the closet and pointing the weapon at the couple, telling them he would kill them if they moved.

The new boyfriend tried to flee toward the bedroom door, but Winfield blocked him. A violent fight erupted. In the struggle, the firearm discharged multiple times. One bullet struck a nearby wall; another bullet flew through the apartment wall and landed in a neighboring unit where several children were asleep. Miraculously, no one in the adjacent apartment was harmed.

Amid the chaos, the new boyfriend landed a blow that knocked the gun out of Winfield’s hands. Winfield bolted from the home.

He later showed up at a hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm. That’s where authorities arrested him.

Winfield now faces multiple felony charges: aggravated assault, domestic assault, reckless endangerment, and aggravated child abuse or neglect. Court documents reveal he has prior domestic violence cases. His bond is set at $400,000, and he’s scheduled to return to court on November 12.

Neighbors say the apartment complex is usually quiet. But in the wake of such a terrifying gateway to violence — a closet turned into a trap — many feel shaken and unsafe. The children next door may not know how close they came to danger. And for the woman and her child caught in the middle, this night will stay with them forever.
