In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a tragic crash on the Lowell Connector left one person dead and another facing serious charges, casting a somber shadow over the city of Lowell, Massachusetts. According to the Massachusetts State Police, the devastating collision occurred around 1:15 a.m. near Exit 5A when a vehicle traveling outbound entered the inbound lanes and struck another car head-on.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle has been identified as Derek Witzenman, 29, of Woburn. Troopers say Witzenman was operating in the inbound lanes while heading outbound—an act that instantly transformed routine traffic into tragedy. He was arrested at the scene and is facing charges including operating under the influence of liquor and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

Meanwhile, the force of the collision left the occupants of the second vehicle in critical condition. First responders transported both the driver and a passenger to Lowell General Hospital, and from there they were flown by medical helicopter to a Boston-area hospital. Despite the efforts of medical teams, the driver later succumbed to their injuries. The state police have not released the name of the deceased pending family notification.

The crash forced the closure of all inbound lanes on the Lowell Connector near Exit 5A until about 4 a.m., sending ripple effects through early-morning commuters and emergency responders alike. The scene remained under investigation as of mid-morning, with troopers working to piece together the full sequence of events.

Witzenman is expected to be arraigned in the Lowell District Court later Wednesday. The charges he faces carry serious consequences, and given the fatal outcome of the crash, the case is likely to draw close scrutiny.

Beyond the legal ramifications, this crash raises broader concerns about wrong-way driving, impaired operation, and highway safety in the region. Authorities have reiterated the dangers posed when someone ends up in the wrong lanes—especially under the influence. While investigations will flesh out whether additional factors such as speed or road conditions played a role, the heart of the tragedy remains the loss of life.

For the community of Lowell and the loved ones of the deceased, the weight of Wednesday’s early-morning events will not fade quickly. Those affected directly and indirectly will carry the impacts far beyond the roadway. As investigators gather evidence and officials prepare to take the next steps, one thing remains clear: a life has been lost, charges have been made, and a dangerous moment on the freeway will be felt for a long time.
