Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, a couple admired worldwide, had a marriage that, like any other, wasn’t always smooth sailing. A new book, “The Windsor Legacy,” shares stories of heated moments between the two, offering a peek behind the royal curtain.
Author Robert Jobson recounts a particular argument in 1954 during a royal tour in Australia. The scene involved a frustrated Prince Philip and an equally upset Queen Elizabeth. While the couple always presented a composed image to the public, insiders reveal that their relationship had its share of disagreements.
According to Jobson, Prince Philip stormed out of a cottage, with Queen Elizabeth following close behind. The argument unfolded right in front of a film crew, who were there to capture a staged royal moment. Queen Elizabeth, realizing the cameras were rolling, quickly brought Prince Philip back inside.
Royal expert Ian Pelham Turner noted that such incidents weren’t uncommon. He mentioned another instance where a film crew overheard a loud argument between the couple, with claims of a tennis racket and shoe being thrown.
Despite these fiery moments, those close to the couple emphasize their deep commitment to each other and to the Crown. Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, said the royal couple were exhausted and “their tempers were very frayed.”
Hilary Fordwich, a British royals expert, shared anecdotes highlighting the couple’s ability to find humor in their relationship. She recalled a prank where Prince Philip dressed as a Grenadier Guard, making the Queen laugh.
Even with disagreements, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip maintained a strong and enduring marriage. Their dedication to duty and to each other was clear. As Queen Elizabeth said during their golden wedding anniversary, Prince Philip was her “strength and stay” throughout her reign.
Their story reminds us that even those in the highest positions face challenges in their relationships. It’s a testament to their commitment and love that they navigated these challenges while upholding the traditions of the monarchy.
