In the still hours of Sunday morning at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office facility in Bessemer, Alabama, 24-year-old D’Koleman Juvan Harris was found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead only minutes later — a sudden and shocking loss that has left his family, friends and the wider community reeling.

According to officials, Harris was discovered during routine rounds at approximately 8:15 a.m. at the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer, following which correctional officers and on-site medical staff immediately began life-saving efforts. Unfortunately, their efforts were not enough and Harris was pronounced dead very soon after being found.

The Coroner’s Office has confirmed that no obvious signs of trauma or forced entry were observed at the time of discovery, and that no foul play is currently being suspected. However, they emphasise that an autopsy and full toxicology screening scheduled for Monday will be critical in determining the official cause and manner of death.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office say they are conducting a wide-ranging review of the circumstances surrounding Harris’s death. This includes examining surveillance video, gathering physical evidence from his cell, and interviewing both staff and other inmates. Additionally, they are looking into Harris’s medical and mental-health records to ascertain whether a pre-existing condition may have contributed.

While the investigation remains active, Harris’s death has triggered a strong response from his loved ones. Described by family as quiet yet caring, and by friends as possessing “a big heart and quiet strength,” his passing has brought home the stark fragility of life behind the bars of the county jail. His sudden absence is being felt deeply.

In the meantime, the community and the family are calling for full transparency from the jail and sheriff’s office — keen to ensure that procedures were followed, that Harris received proper monitoring and care, and that any contributing factors are fully understood. The hope is that the investigation will provide the clarity needed to give loved ones some sense of closure.

At this stage, authorities emphasise again that foul play is not suspected, but until the autopsy and toxicology results are released, many questions remain unanswered. As Harris’s circle mourns a life cut short, they await the official findings — hoping for truth, accountability, and perhaps a measure of peace.
