After a Fireplace Explosion, One Australian Mother’s Journey From Survival to Strength

What was meant to be a joyful milestone celebration became a life-altering moment for Adele Tamati, a mother from Perth, when a backyard accident left her fighting for survival.

In 2022, during her 50th birthday party, an outdoor ethanol fireplace suddenly exploded, engulfing her in flames. Within seconds, a relaxed evening with family turned into chaos — and a desperate race to save her life.

Today, Tamati’s story is not only about the accident itself, but about resilience, recovery, and the unexpected strength that can emerge in moments of crisis.

The accident happened after the fireplace flame went out. Tamati attempted to relight it by pouring ethanol fuel onto the decorative stones inside the unit — a common practice many homeowners assume is safe.

Instead, the fuel ignited instantly, creating a flash explosion that set her entire body alight.

Despite first-aid training and instinctively trying to “stop, drop and roll,” the flames would not extinguish because her clothing and skin were coated with accelerant.

She later recalled believing she might not survive.

As panic spread among guests, her son Dene Fowler tried to smother the fire using blankets, but the flames continued to spread.

Realizing time was running out, he urged his mother toward the backyard pool. When she slipped before reaching it, he pushed her into the water — a decision that likely saved her life.

The flames finally stopped when she hit the pool. Fowler jumped in after her, helping keep her calm as she struggled to breathe and went into shock.

Tamati sustained third-degree burns across much of her body, including her face, chest, hands, back, and limbs.

Her recovery required multiple surgeries, skin grafts, and weeks of intensive treatment. Complications followed, including infections and unsuccessful attempts at advanced skin-repair procedures.

After five weeks in hospital, she began rehabilitation — relearning how to use her hands and adjusting to a body that felt unfamiliar.

At the time of the accident, her partner, mining technician Dion Tamati, was working hundreds of miles away. He returned immediately, supporting her through recovery. The couple later married on New Year’s Eve in 2024, marking a hopeful chapter after years of healing.

The emotional recovery proved just as challenging as the physical one.

Tamati has spoken openly about struggling to recognize herself after the injuries, describing the shock of seeing her scars for the first time and mourning the loss of her former appearance.

Over time, connection with other burn survivors became a turning point. She began participating in charity runs, organizing local support groups, and marking each anniversary of the accident — her “burniversary” — with acts of personal empowerment, including a photo shoot celebrating her scars.

These moments, she says, helped transform survival into acceptance.

Backyard fire features and ethanol fireplaces have grown increasingly popular in homes across Australia, the U.K., and North America, often marketed as stylish and low-maintenance. Yet safety experts warn that refueling while heat remains can trigger sudden ignition.

Tamati’s experience highlights how ordinary household settings can carry hidden risks — and how quickly accidents can escalate.

It also underscores the importance of immediate action during burn emergencies. Quick decisions, like Fowler’s instinct to use water immersion, can mean the difference between life and death.

But beyond safety lessons, her story speaks to something deeply human: the long, uneven journey of rebuilding identity after trauma, and the role family and community play in helping someone rediscover confidence.

Birthdays usually mark the passage of time. For Tamati, one birthday now marks survival itself.

The scars remain, but so does a renewed sense of purpose — shaped by gratitude, resilience, and the knowledge that healing often happens not in a single moment, but in countless small steps taken with others beside you.
