COLUMBUS, Ohio — Eleven‑year-old Amya Frazier died Monday after being critically wounded in what police believe was an accidental shooting inside a home in the city’s Hilltop neighborhood. The girl was shot Friday evening at a house on the 200 block of South Wheatland Avenue.

Officers from the Columbus Division of Police responded just before 6:30 p.m. after a caller reported a child had been seriously injured. Upon arrival, they found Amya suffering from a gunshot wound. First responders provided immediate aid and took her to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where she remained in critical condition.

Despite several days of intensive care, Amya did not recover. Her death on Monday was confirmed when the coroner’s office notified local media on Tuesday.

Investigators say the shooting appears to have occurred among family members and was unintentional. No signs point to a deliberate act of violence, and the case remains under investigation. At this time, no charges have been filed.

Neighbors described deep shock and sorrow. One recounted hearing a single gunshot — then, moments later, screams echoing down the street. People rushed outside, stunned by the sudden violence in what had seemed a peaceful, child‑filled home.

Another neighbor worried aloud about her own young grandchildren — expressing how easily the same tragedy could have hit her family. The incident has stirred renewed conversations around gun safety, especially where children are present.

As the community mourns, officials urge safe handling and secure storage of firearms in homes. Detectives continue gathering statements and piecing together the timeline. For now, the loss of Amya Frazier remains a painful reminder of how fragile life can be — and the heavy cost of unintended mistakes.
