The woman found unresponsive Friday evening following a shooting and crash on Worth Street has died, police said — the victim, identified as Angela Taylor, succumbed to blunt force trauma sustained in the crash, not from gunfire.

At about 4:45 p.m. on December 5, officers from the Knoxville Police Department (KPD) responded to reports of a shooting near West Oldham Avenue and Worth Street in North Knoxville. When they arrived, they discovered a vehicle had veered down an embankment. Inside were two women — one shot, the other unresponsive and slumped, later identified as Angela Taylor. Both were rushed to UT Medical Center for emergency care.

Investigators later determined the gunfire happened near the intersection of Worth Street and West Emerald Avenue, based on crime‑scene evidence and surveillance video. According to KPD, the shooting preceded the crash. The surveillance footage showed a black Honda Accord speeding away from the scene immediately after the shots were fired.

By around 8:30 p.m. that same evening, detectives — with the help of the department’s Community Engagement Response Team and Violent Crimes Unit — located the suspect vehicle parked at a grocery store on Clinton Highway (a location known to many Knoxville residents, the Kroger there). Inside were two men, later identified as 20-year-old Jamarcus Murphy and 18-year-old Jamahus Murphy, who were promptly taken into custody without incident.

In their initial charging documents, both men face counts of attempted first-degree murder. On top of that, Jamahus Murphy is also charged with employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. With Taylor’s passing, police say additional charges connected to the crash — likely homicide-related — are expected to be filed.

The other woman inside the vehicle — the one struck by gunfire — remains hospitalized. Authorities describe her injuries as serious but not life-threatening. Officials have not yet released her name, nor confirmed whether she was driving the car when the crash occurred.

As of now, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. The KPD statement emphasizes the investigation is ongoing. Detectives are still combing through evidence and video, and expect to release more information as it becomes available.

This tragedy has left a community reeling — a shooting turned fatal not by a bullet, but by a crash. For Angela Taylor’s loved ones and for those seriously wounded, answers are coming, and justice may soon follow.
