Atlanta’s southwest side is reeling after a 14-year-old boy died in a tragic shooting Wednesday evening that police say could have been prevented. Around 7:15 p.m., officers with the Atlanta Police Department were called to the Villages at Castleberry Hill apartment complex on Greensferry Avenue SW, near the Mercedes-Benz Stadium area, after reports of a shooting inside a unit.

When officers arrived, they found the young teenager suffering from a gunshot wound to his back. Emergency crews rushed him to a local hospital in critical condition, but doctors were unable to save him.

Investigators say the incident stemmed from mishandling of a loaded firearm inside the apartment. That’s when Jaden Young, 23, who was present with the teen, admitted to police that neither he nor the boy had taken proper safety steps before handling the gun. Young told authorities he did not clear or make the weapon safe before letting the teenager handle it, according to arrest documents.

Young was arrested shortly after the shooting and now faces serious charges, including involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct, and second-degree cruelty to children. In Georgia, those charges mean prosecutors believe his reckless actions, even without intent to harm, led to the death of his young cousin.

Neighbors at the Villages at Castleberry Hill say the community is in shock. Some described hearing sirens and seeing a heavy police presence as detectives worked into the night, putting up crime scene tape and questioning residents. Many residents expressed sadness and disbelief that a routine evening in their complex turned into a nightmare.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances that led up to the shooting. At this stage, detectives have not released details about whether Young and the boy lived in the same unit, or how long they had been together before the gun discharged.

This heartbreaking death in Atlanta underscores a broader issue of firearm safety. Unintentional shootings remain a concern statewide, and officials remind residents of the importance of proper gun storage and handling to prevent similar tragedies.
