With next year’s midterm elections setting up a possible generational shift for Illinois’ representation in Washington, candidates and their supporters are on the streets collecting the petition signatures needed to secure a place on the March primary ballots. A slew of candidates are vying for four U.S. House seats being vacated by veteran members of Congress — two of whom are retiring, while the other two are seeking to become Illinois’ next U.S. senator. The fourth House seat officially opened up when 83-year-old U.S. Rep. Danny Davis announced in late July that he would not seek a 16th term representing…
This month marks yet another turning point in the checkered financial history of Chicago Public Schools. With a projected $734 million deficit, as estimated by the interim CEO, the Board of Education must pass a budget by the end of August. The decisions made in the coming days will determine whether CPS begins a path to fiscal stability — or plunges into a tailspin that will make recovery brutally painful. Closing the gap was already a herculean task when it stood at $529 million, before the interim CEO added $175 million in the form of a pension reimbursement that City…
President Trump’s nominee to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics is suggesting that the agency suspend its monthly jobs report, an economic staple that is relied upon by the Federal Reserve and U.S. businesses to gauge the health of the economy. In an interview on Fox News Digital on Monday ahead of his nomination, E.J. Antoni criticized the monthly employment report as flawed and suggested it be replaced with “more accurate, though less timely, quarterly data.” Antoni, who is a fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank, was tapped by Mr. Trump on Monday to run the BLS after the…
There’s a new push to change state laws regarding competency in criminal cases. The Colorado Parents Advocacy Network has started a new petition that calls on the state’s district attorneys to urge the governor to call an emergency special session to amend or repeal those laws. This comes after charges were dropped in a number of cases, some involving murder and kidnapping, due to offenders being deemed incompetent to stand trial. Right now, state law requires a judge to dismiss charges against suspects who are found both incompetent and not restorable. That is what happened in the case of Solomon…
For perhaps the first time ever, all eight U.S. Representatives from Colorado — four Democrats and four Republicans — came together in Denver for a unique event hosted by the Colorado Chamber of Commerce. The members sat side by side and talked about how they’re working hand in hand for Colorado to, among other things, secure more firefighting aircraft, keep U.S. Space Command here, and regulate artificial intelligence. “We need to provide a regulatory framework at the federal level,” said Democratic Rep. Brittany Pettersen, who represents Congressional District 7. “We know a patchwork approach is impossible for companies to navigate.”…
The U.S. stock market is rallying toward records on Tuesday after data suggested inflation across the country was a touch better last month than economists expected. The S&P 500 rose 1.1% and was on track to top its all-time high set two weeks ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 473 points, or 1.1%, as of 2:46 p.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 1.3% higher and also heading toward a record. Stocks got a lift from hopes that the better-than-expected inflation report will give the Federal Reserve leeway to cut interest rates at its next meeting in…
Investigators quickly ruled the cause of a house fire in Aurora to be accidental, but now five people, four dogs, and a turtle have been displaced from their home. The fire was called in around 7:10 p.m. on Tuesday near East 7th Avenue and North Norfolk Way, according to Aurora Fire Rescue. In total, 14 units from AFR and Falck Rocky Mountain responded to the call. Upon their arrival, firefighters found the back of the home engulfed in flames. By the time the fire was fully extinguished, the home suffered “major damage” to the interior and exterior, as well as…
Xcel Energy filed a proposal for approval with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission in October of 2024, but interest in the topic is quickly garnering attention. Following a report on opposition to the plan, dozens of community and business leaders have gathered in support of it. “Thirty-eight mayors representing over half the state’s population are really in favor of expanding the electric capacity for Excel Energy because of the long-term and long-range impacts it has on the state,” said Heigh Williams, the executive director of the Metro Mayors Caucus and the former mayor of Thornton. The caucus sent a letter…
As Colorado sees growth in the licensed and legal use of psychedelic mushrooms, CU Denver is stepping in to help train more people under state regulations. This could be a big boost for business owners and the industry as a whole. At Vivid Minds Cafe, customers can grab a smoothie packed with mushrooms for focus and energy — or order something much more mind-expanding. “The smallest amount of psilocybin can help with depression,” co-owner Manon Manoeuvre said. The cafe not only serves superfood drinks, but also houses one of the few state-licensed spaces in Colorado for psilocybin journeys. A facilitator…
Four days after a gunman riddled the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s main campus in Atlanta with bullets, CDC employees say they are still looking for steady leadership and clear communication. The agency’s first all-hands meeting since the attack ran roughly 12 minutes, began late and was beset by technical problems, according to staff who tried to watch. In Tuesday’s all-hands, new CDC Director Susan Monarez described the shooting as “an attack in our community … and in many ways the very mission that we serve.” She warned that “misinformation can be dangerous … we need to rebuild the…
