The Cherry Creek Bruins are back in the state Colorado state 5A football championships, but for one student athlete, this weekend is about far more than the quest for another title. A win Saturday would give senior center Cayden Lee the chance to extend one of Colorado’s most unusual football traditions: becoming the fourth player across three generations of his family to win a state championship. All three generations went undefeated that season. The legacy began during the 1968-69 season when Lee’s grandfather, Greg Lee, won a state title as a senior at Laramie High School in a 48-0 victory…
On a stretch of East Colfax in Aurora lined with suds and spray, a locally owned car wash says one more competitor could be the one that shuts it down. Gleam Car Wash, which operates two locations in the metro area, sits just down the road from a QuikTrip gas station at Colfax and Airport Boulevard. QuikTrip now wants to add a Bubble Bath tunnel car wash on that corner, about half a mile from Gleam and within a mile of several other washes. Manager Emilie Baratta says Gleam’s mission is bigger than clean cars. It’s about jobs, inclusion and…
An internal report obtained by CBS Colorado raises several concerns about how Colorado’s helitak program is being run. The state spent tens of millions of dollars on firefighting helicopters that were said to be a game-changer for crews across Colorado, who would no longer need to rely on federal air support. “We now have four helicopters in our fleet, two of those being Firehawks. Those are year-round assets, which we have never had,” said Mike Morgan, director of Colorado’s Department of Fire Prevention and Control. On July 10, a lightning strike ignited the South Rim Fire. For days, it burned…
Starting in February, some Colorado residents will see an increased 911 surcharge on their phone bills. It’s to support and enhance critical emergency communications between community members and dispatchers. Cathy Raley, the executive director of the Arapahoe County 911 Authority, said everyone has the 911 surcharge on their phone bill. It appears as a separate line item, whether it’s a landline, prepaid phone or a cell phone. “We are responsible for that funding, and we use those funds to provide technology and support to the six 911 centers that are within the Arapahoe County 911 Authority,” said Raley. Beginning in…
In 2025, the United States has recorded the most measles cases in more than 30 years, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows. A large share of the infections were connected to an outbreak in West Texas that led to the deaths of two children. The number of cases in Texas alone grew to over 760 before the state declared it officially over in August, while total cases nationwide have topped 1,800, with infections confirmed in at least 39 states. Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases, and in some cases, can cause severe infections in the lungs and brain that can lead…
Federal regulators said they are expanding an investigation into Waymo this week, following reports that the company’s self-driving cars navigated around school buses stopped on the road in Austin, Texas. In a letter to Waymo dated Dec. 3, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it will investigate the performance of the autonomous vehicles and their ability to follow traffic safety laws. Reuters first reported the news. The Austin Independent School District told CBS News it is now aware of 20 incidents this school year in which a Waymo vehicle illegally passed a school bus. All 50 U.S. states have laws requiring…
CDC Committee Reconsiders Hepatitis B Vaccine Policy A group of experts that advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on vaccines has made a surprising recommendation regarding the hepatitis B vaccine for newborns. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted 8-3 to shift away from a blanket recommendation that all babies receive their first dose of the vaccine within 24 hours of birth. Instead, the committee suggests a more personalized approach. For babies who test negative for hepatitis B, the decision to vaccinate at birth should be made on a case-by-case basis, in consultation with parents. The…
The stars of “Gold Rush” are unearthing more than just gold this season. With gold prices soaring to around $3,800 an ounce, and miners collectively raking in close to $100 million, Parker Schnabel, a successful young miner, suggests this boom reflects a growing distrust in the U.S. dollar. Schnabel believes the gold rush is a direct result of Americans losing confidence in the strength of our currency. He points to the excessive spending in Washington and a lack of willingness by lawmakers to address the nation’s mounting financial obligations. “Look at the amount of debt the United States has,” Schnabel…
Kenner, Louisiana Businesses Feel the Strain as Immigration Enforcement Increases Kenner, Louisiana, a city with a large Hispanic population, is seeing some businesses struggle as federal authorities increase immigration enforcement. She says fewer customers are coming because they are afraid to leave their homes. Federal vehicles have been seen driving through Kenner as the Department of Homeland Security carries out its latest operation. Similar actions have taken place in other cities.
