It feels like midwinter in the Philadelphia region, and for a few spots, it even looks the part. The day began with teens and low 20s, and some light snow slid from Delaware into southern New Jersey during the morning. Philadelphia picked up a few flakes, though nothing that stuck around long. Areas south of I-95 managed a quick dusting before everything tapered off near midday. Even with the snow gone, the cold holds on. Temperatures in the afternoon hover near 32, so keep the layers handy. Lows tonight will be in the 20s and low 30s. High pressure slides…

Washington — The Supreme Court on Thursday restored for now Texas’ newly redrawn congressional map that could give Republicans five additional House seats, after a lower court found that some of the new voting lines were racially discriminatory. The high court appeared to split 6-3. It said in an unsigned order that it “has repeatedly emphasized that lower federal courts should ordinarily not alter the election rules on the eve of an election,” and the district court “violated that rule here.” “The District Court improperly inserted itself into an active primary campaign, causing much confusion and upsetting the delicate federal-state…

Mangione’s defense is arguing that evidence including his backpack and its contents – a 9mm pistol with a silencer and a notebook filled with writings expressing disdain for the health insurance industry – should not be admitted, saying it was unlawfully searched without a warrant. The hearing is related to his state case in New York. Mangione, 27, still faces federal charges that could result in the death penalty in…

The spots gave it away. Just like a human fingerprint, the rosette pattern on each jaguar is unique so researchers knew they had a new animal on their hands after reviewing images captured by a remote camera in southern Arizona. The University of Arizona Wild Cat Research and Conservation Center says it’s the fifth big cat over the last 15 years to be spotted in the area after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. The animal was captured by the camera as it visited a watering hole in November, its distinctive spots setting it apart from previous sightings. “We’re very excited. It…

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s vaccine advisory panel voted Friday to change the recommendation for when children should get their first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine. Instead of a first dose within 24 hours of birth — as the CDC has advised for more than 30 years — the panel voted to recommend delaying it until a child is 2 months old for children born to mothers who test negative for the virus. The panel voted, in a 8-2 decision, to recommend individual decision-making in consultation with a health care provider to determine when or if to…
