JALALABAD, Afghanistan – The Taliban has turned down a request from former U.S. President Donald Trump to give back Bagram Air Base. This comes four years after the U.S. military left Afghanistan. Trump said on Saturday that he wanted the U.S. to have a presence at Bagram again. He even mentioned talking to Afghanistan about it. When asked if he would send troops to take the base, Trump didn’t give a clear answer. “We won’t talk about that,” Trump said. “We want it back, and we want it back right away. If they don’t do it, you’re going to find…
Kavan Markwood, the Pirates fan who fell 21 feet from his seat onto the warning track at PNC Park earlier this year, threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Saturday’s game. Video showed his legs clipping the railing in front of him after he jumped up to celebrate a play. Doctors said he suffered several injuries, including to his skull, brain, spine, ribs and lungs. But at the time, they said he was recovering ahead of schedule, given the…
Media within the Pentagon covering the U.S. military will face new restrictions on the information they are allowed to report or face loss of access to the Pentagon, according to a memo officials distributed to reporters on Friday. Members of the press will be required to sign a document acknowledging they should not disclose either classified or controlled unclassified information that is not formally authorized for publication, says the memo from the Department of Defense, which the Trump administration has renamed the Department of War. It says Pentagon reporters may lose their press credentials for “unauthorized access, attempted unauthorized access,…
Civitavecchia, Italy — Along Italy’s Mediterranean coast on Thursday, driver Fabio Barone raced across the flight deck of a navy ship while chasing a world record: the fastest car on a boat. Last year, Barone set the Italian Timekeepers Federation’s record on another aircraft carrier in southern Italy, hitting 94.4 mph. In Civitavecchia, on the coast near Rome, he aimed to reach at least 99.4 mph and then hit the brakes in time to avoid launching off the deck’s so-called “ski jump” and smashing into the cruise ship stationed just fore. Race engineer Alessandro Tedino told The Associated Press that he…
The sun has become more and more active over the last 16 years, in a turn that surprised scientists and could affect space weather and technology on Earth, NASA announced this week. A new research, conducted by two NASA scientists and published earlier in September in the peer-reviewed Astrophysical Journal Letters, shows that solar activity has ramped up after 2008 — an unexpected reversal following a decades-long decline that was initially thought to foreshadow a period of historic inaction on the surface of the sun. “All signs were pointing to the Sun going into a prolonged phase of low activity,” Jamie Jasinski,…
