With the Eagles’ first win of the season under our belt, Philadelphians can head into this weekend feeling a little lighter. The City of Brotherly Love is hosting major musical acts this weekend, including Sting and Shaggy’s One Fine Day music festival at The Mann and Tate McRae’s Miss Posessive Tour at the Xfinity Mobile Arena. The region is also home to the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Kennett Square Mushroom Festival and Philly Fun Fishing Festival — to name a few. Here’s what…

SEPTA is seeking approval from Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration to use capital project money to fund operations and avoid service cuts for the next two years, the transit authority’s general manager said Friday. According to a letter obtained by CBS News Philadelphia, SEPTA is asking the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to flex up to $394 million from its capital expenses to operating from its Public Transit Trust Fund. The Public Transit Trust Fund, which is in place for all transit agencies across Pennsylvania, not just SEPTA, is designated for infrastructure projects and vehicle replacements. The Powerball jackpot soared to an estimated $1.8 billion for Saturday night’s drawing after no tickets came up winners of Wednesday’s $1.4 billion grand prize, Powerball said. Saturday’s pot of gold would have an estimated cash value of $826.4 million. Both totals are before taxes. The winning numbers in Wednesday’s drawing were 3, 16, 29, 61 and 69, with a Powerball of 22. Saturday’s windfall would be the second-biggest in U.S. lottery history, only trailing the world-record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot won on Nov. 7, 2022, in California. Including the upcoming drawing, there have been six jackpots of more than…
One day after a lightning-delayed, loogie-filled win over the Cowboys, the Eagles are adding a veteran pass rusher to the mix. The Eagles on Friday signed defensive end Za’Darius Smith to a one-year contract and placed fullback/special teams ace Ben VanSumeren on injured reserve. VanSumeren was carted off after suffering a knee injury on the opening kickoff in Philadelphia’s 24-20 win over Dallas on Thursday night. VanSumeren, a former linebacker who converted to full-time fullback, tore his ACL last November in practice. Smith, 32, is a three-time Pro Bowl who began last season with the Cleveland Browns before a midseason trade…
Cyclists plan protest ride in Philadelphia in response to possible backpedal on bike lane protection
A big rally is planned for Center City on Friday evening as cyclists take a “protest ride” in a call for safer bike lanes. Organizers expect between 200 and 500 cyclists to show up at the Art Museum around 5 p.m. for a rally followed by a bike ride through Center City ending at City Hall. Cyclists have been pleading for more safety measures, including concrete barriers along the Spruce and Pine street bike lanes for years. They thought it was finally going to happen this year, but an internal memo shows city officials could be backpedaling on that idea.…
What to know about Trump administration news today: President Trump on Friday signed an executive order renaming the Department of Defense the Department of War, and changing the title of secretary of defense to secretary of war. Mr. Trump said he doesn’t “know anything” about a reported 2019 botched Navy SEAL operation in North Korea. He also signed other orders, including one that would allow the U.S. to punish countries that illegally detain U.S. nationals or take them hostage. New government numbers show the labor market fell short of economists’ expectations. Top Trump officials acknowledged the figures were disappointing. Trump:…
The killing of Philadelphia police officer Richard Mendez at a Philadelphia International Airport parking garage two years ago was connected to an auto theft ring that crossed state lines, New Jersey officials say. And now, 13 people have been indicted in connection with that theft ring — including the three men charged in Mendez’s 2023 murder. The group members are facing charges of racketeering, weapons offenses, promoting organized street crime, theft and conspiracy. Law enforcement officials allege the group stole over 40 cars from 2021 to 2024, targeting homes, car dealerships and parking garages. The break-ins and thefts happened in…
The Trump administration told Kilmar Abrego Garcia on Friday it is now seeking to deport him to the tiny African kingdom of Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, according to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement email obtained by CBS News. The email from a top ICE official noted that Abrego Garcia’s attorneys have warned he fears being persecuted or tortured in Uganda, where federal authorities threatened to deport him last month after he was detained once again by immigration officials following his release from criminal custody. The ICE official said Abrego Garcia, through his attorneys, has also claimed fear of being…
Giorgio Armani leaves a legacy not only as a seminal figure in the history of fashion, but also as a visionary business leader who built a globally recognized brand and multibillion-dollar business empire, industry experts said after his death Thursday at age 91. “Armani made certain that his vision was consistent and that it was always classy, even down to presentation in the Armani Exchange stores,” Shawn Grain Carter, an associate professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, told CBS MoneyWatch. Armani, or “Re Giorgio” (King George) as the Italians call him, famously created luxury looks for Hollywood stars, while…
