The first hurricane of the season to affect the Philadelphia area is long gone, but Jersey Shore towns are still dealing with the aftermath. Beach erosion is making it difficult to get onto some New Jersey beaches. The Department of Public Works was busy in Strathmere on Monday, days after Hurricane Erin passed by offshore, but still left behind a mess in the form of beach erosion. “Every low tide, we can come out and harvest sand to create an access path or to shore up our dune system,” Upper Township Mayor Curtis T. Corson said. Upper Township Beach Patrol Chief…
Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler has venous thoracic outlet syndrome that was diagnosed after he had a blood clot removed from his right pitching shoulder last week, according to an update from the team. The surgery that Wheeler will have involves removing a rib. Doctors say he’s facing a long and potentially challenging recovery. Dr. Cherie Erkmen, a thoracic surgeon at Temple University, is not treating Wheeler and spoke with CBS News Philadelphia about the procedure. “Thoracic outlet syndrome can manifest in many different ways,” Erkmen said. “It’s when the first rib has pressed on either the nerve, the artery or…
SEPTA said it was left with no other option. Without critical funding from Harrisburg, service cuts began on Sunday across the Philadelphia region. On Monday, SEPTA officials said service has been “off to a decent start” on the first workday. SEPTA officials said they believe riders planned ahead for these cuts. They said they didn’t see any major issues with kids going back to school this morning. But they acknowledged it certainly wasn’t a normal day for the system. “Things are moving a little bit slower than normal,” SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch said. “We’re seeing crowded conditions on subway trains…
As thousands of Philadelphia students head back to class, one man at John B. Kelly Elementary School in Germantown is showing that sometimes the best lessons aren’t found in textbooks. Jonathan Sampson is part of the school district’s student climate staff, a small but powerful group whose job is to step in before a child is sent to the principal’s office. For Sampson, discipline isn’t about punishment. It’s about patience, guidance and love. “You guys aren’t bad, you guys are maybe making bad decisions, but we’re all not perfect,” Sampson said he tells his students. Sampson calls those interactions “teachable moments.”…
A small crowd of people gathered around the bullpen at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy to watch Mo’ne Davis pitch on the first day of the Women’s Professional Baseball League tryouts. Their phones were raised to capture the moment, as the former Little League World Series sensation called out “two-seamer!” before firing a fastball toward the catcher a few feet away. Davis, a Philadelphia native, hasn’t pitched in front of an audience in several years, but she’s grown accustomed to attention. At 13, she made history as the first girl to pitch a victory — and a shutout —…

Baltimore Immigration Case Sparks Controversy In Baltimore, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, whose situation reflects ongoing immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, was detained by immigration officials on Monday. This comes after he enjoyed a brief period of freedom, as officials renewed efforts to deport him. His legal team wasted no time, filing a lawsuit to challenge the deportation, arguing that sending him back could endanger his safety. A judge issued a temporary court order halting his deportation for two days, which also applies to other immigrants in similar situations in Maryland. Public Support Shown at Rally Before turning himself in, Abrego…
House Republicans Investigate Allegations of Manipulated Crime Data in Washington D.C. In a significant move, House Republicans have initiated an investigation into troubling claims that officials in Washington, D.C., may have tampered with crime statistics. The House Oversight Committee, led by Chairman James Comer, expressed serious concerns regarding the integrity of crime data reported to the public. Chairman Comer emphasized the committee’s commitment to uncovering the truth, stating, “The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is investigating disturbing allegations that D.C. crime data is inaccurate and potentially manipulated.” The allegations suggest that this manipulation might have occurred at the behest…
