Beloved Christiana Man, 84, Identified as Victim in Tragic Outbuilding Fire

It’s the kind of news that hits a small town like Christiana hard. After weeks of waiting and wondering, the community finally has a name for the neighbor lost in that devastating fire earlier this month. Local officials have confirmed that 84-year-old Khammone Phomdouangsy was the man found inside an outbuilding that was swallowed by flames on the night of December 8.

The fire broke out on a quiet, rural stretch of Ridley Earp Road in the 7000 block. When the call came in around 8:00 p.m., Rutherford County Fire and Rescue crews rushed to the scene, but they were met with a nightmare scenario for any first responder. The property sat on difficult, rugged terrain with very few ways to get in, which meant firefighters had to navigate a literal uphill battle just to reach the blaze.

By the time crews fought through the brush and limited access points, the outbuilding was already a wall of fire. They worked quickly to keep the flames from jumping to the surrounding woods or other structures, but the discovery they made once the smoke cleared was heartbreaking. Inside the charred remains, they found Mr. Phomdouangsy. Because the damage was so severe, officials had to wait for the medical examiner to make a formal identification, a process that stretched into late December.

The scene that night wasn’t just about the fire. As investigators and medics from Rutherford County EMS worked the property, they realized they weren’t the only ones there. Several dogs were found on the site, clearly shaken by the chaos. Rutherford County PAWS was called in to help, making sure the animals were safe, fed, and moved to a place where they could be cared for while the investigation unfolded.

Right now, the Fire Marshal’s Office is still keeping the case file open as they wait for the final toxicology and medical reports to come back. However, there is a small bit of peace for the family: investigators say there’s absolutely no evidence of foul play or anything criminal. It looks like a tragic, terrible accident that claimed the life of a man who had called this county home for a long time.

This loss has been a sobering reminder for the folks living in the more remote parts of Rutherford County. Fire officials pointed out that in places where the land is tough and the houses are tucked away, every second counts, and the natural landscape can unfortunately become a barrier when help is on the way. They’ve spent the last few days urging neighbors to check their smoke detectors and be extra careful with heating in outbuildings.

As the holidays wrap up, the Rutherford County Fire and Rescue team shared their deepest condolences with Mr. Phomdouangsy’s loved ones. It’s a heavy end to the year for Christiana, but the thorough work of the many agencies involved—from the sheriff’s deputies to the animal welfare officers—ensured that even in the middle of a tragedy, no detail was left behind and no one, including the four-legged residents, was forgotten.
