Owatonna, Minn. — The Owatonna High School community is grieving the loss of former cheerleader Mariah Ash, a young woman known for her kindness, compassion, and the way she made people feel seen and valued. Her family confirmed her passing this week, and tributes began pouring in almost immediately from classmates, coaches, and friends.

Mariah lit up every room she entered. With a smile that was quick to show and a heart that was quick to help, she was more than just a teammate or classmate — she was a friend who listened, encouraged others, and lifted spirits even on hard days. Friends say she had a rare ability to make anyone feel heard, whether it was through a gentle word, a thoughtful gesture, or just being present.

Her time cheering for OHS brought out the best in her. Cheerleaders and coaches remember Mariah as someone full of energy and enthusiasm, always cheering just as loudly for her team off the field as on it. She carried that same joy into every relationship she had, and her presence became a comforting constant in the lives of many around her.

In the days since her death, stories of her compassion have filled social feeds and conversations around town. One friend shared how Mariah always made others feel “seen and valued,” recalling moments when Mariah would make time in her day just to ask how someone was doing — and really listen to the answer.

For her family, the loss is immeasurable. They describe Mariah as the heart of their home, someone whose gentle spirit and loving nature shaped every relationship she held. “She cared deeply about others,” her family shared. “Her grace and kindness were a gift to everyone she knew.”

Mariah’s legacy is not just in the memories of her smile or cheer routines, but in the way she inspired others to be kinder and more present. Her story is one of connection, love, and the powerful impact one person can have by simply caring for others.

School officials and classmates are holding space for one another during this painful time, and many in the community are gathering to celebrate her life this weekend with shared stories, pictures, and moments of remembrance.

Mariah will be deeply missed, but her spirit — bright, kind, and full of heart — will remain a lasting part of the Owatonna High School community and all who were lucky enough to know her.
