Music icon Billy Joel surprised fans with an unexpected performance in Wellington, Florida, ringing in the new year with a touch of his classic charm. This appearance marks his first time on stage since publicly discussing his health challenges earlier in the year.
Joel, 76, joined the Billy Joel cover band Turnstiles during Wellington’s 30th birthday celebration. The crowd welcomed him with cheers as he walked on stage, using a cane, and took his place behind the piano.
Before playing, Joel told the audience that he hadn’t planned on performing that night. He then delighted the crowd with renditions of “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and “Big Shot,” alongside the band.
Back in May, Joel had announced the cancellation of his shows due to a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain condition affecting balance, vision, and hearing. His team mentioned that concert performances had made the condition worse, leading to a need for physical therapy and rest.
Joel’s wife, Alexis Roderick Joel, expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received. She described Joel as a beloved father and husband, emphasizing the family’s hope for his recovery.
NPH is more common in older adults and involves a buildup of fluid in the brain. Treatment often includes surgery to help drain this excess fluid.
His former wife, Christie Brinkley, also shared a message of support, sending “lots of love and good wishes for a full and speedy recovery.”
In July, Joel reassured his fans, stating he was “okay” and working to manage his condition. He acknowledged the diagnosis was “scary” but wanted to ease concerns about his overall health.
