Cameroon Re-Elects Longtime Leader Amidst Protests
YAOUNDE, Cameroon – Paul Biya, the current president of Cameroon, has been re-elected, according to the nation’s highest court. This announcement follows days of unrest where protesters clashed with security forces, resulting in casualties. Opposition groups had called for a fair and transparent election.
Biya has been in power since 1982. The Constitutional Council stated that Biya won with 53.66% of the vote, while his rival, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, received 35.19%. Voter turnout was reported at 57.7%.
Tchiroma has alleged misconduct, claiming security forces fired on civilians in his hometown. He questioned their motives, but provided no hard evidence for his claims.
Prior to the official announcement, Tchiroma asserted victory based on his party’s count, a claim Biya’s party disputed. Protests erupted in Douala and other cities, with demonstrators taking to the streets.
Biya’s decision to seek another term has sparked criticism. Opposition groups have accused him of unfairly influencing the election process.
Videos circulating online show clashes between protesters and security forces, who used tear gas to disperse crowds. Authorities reported injuries to security personnel and arrests of protesters.
While some express disappointment and concerns about corruption, others support Biya. A supporter, Flicia Feh, voiced her belief that Biya should be allowed to finish projects he started, like the Yaoundé-Douala motorway.
The government stated that many observers were present to monitor the election. While some groups noted irregularities like deceased voters on lists and ballot box issues, the African Union mission suggested the election largely met standards.
Biya’s long tenure has been marked by both stability and challenges. Cameroon has faced attacks from militants in the north and unrest in English-speaking regions. While the nation has economic growth, some young people say the benefits haven’t reached everyone.
Some analysts express concerns about Cameroon’s future. Others believe that Biya’s experience is needed to guide the country through its challenges, citing his focus on infrastructure and national unity.
