In the early hours of Sunday, October 26, 2025, the Holly Springs community was shaken by a devastating incident that claimed the life of 14-year-old Max Dunham. The ninth-grade student at Holly Springs High School was riding his bicycle on Avent Ferry Road near Holly Meadow Drive when he was struck by a vehicle, leading to a tragic chain of events.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 1:40 a.m. to find a chaotic aftermath. Authorities later determined that Max was hit during a collision between a 2008 Honda Civic and a 2021 Honda Passport. The impact of the initial collision caused a head-on crash between the two vehicles. While the driver of the Honda Civic and a passenger in the Honda Passport sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital, Max was pronounced dead at the scene.

Captured in Irvine, California, this image conveys themes of public safety, law enforcement, emergency response, and community protection. The driver of the Honda Passport, 16-year-old Ashton Henry Rahlfs, was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, underage drinking, and violating level 2 driving restrictions, which prohibit unsupervised driving after 9 p.m. and carrying passengers under 21. Court records revealed that Rahlfs had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.11%, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08%. He was released to a family member under a written promise to appear in court in November.

In the wake of this tragedy, Holly Springs High School has mobilized support for students and staff. Principal Gary Duvall sent a heartfelt letter to families, expressing condolences and offering grief counseling services. The school is partnering with Transitions GriefCare and Alliance Health to provide emotional support and mental health services to those affected. A 24-hour crisis line is available at 1-877-233-4617 for anyone in need of assistance.

The loss of Max has left a profound impact on the Holly Springs community. Residents have come together to support the Dunham family, sharing memories and expressing their sorrow. Max is remembered as a kind and promising young man whose warmth and spirit will never be forgotten.

This tragedy has also sparked renewed conversations about teen driving safety and the importance of responsible behavior behind the wheel. As the investigation continues, the Holly Springs community remains united in grief and support for the Dunham family during this incredibly difficult time.
