NEWPORT, N.H. — A quiet Friday afternoon turned tragic when a pickup truck crossed the centerline on Maple Street and crashed head‑on into a Jeep Wrangler, killing the woman driving the Jeep and sending a Connecticut man to the hospital — now facing serious charges.

At around 3:42 p.m., emergency crews from the Newport Police Department and the local fire department responded to a report of a two‑vehicle collision on Maple Street. According to investigators, a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck — driven eastbound by 49-year-old Dylan Galland of East Windsor, Connecticut — veered over the median, crossing the centerline and colliding head‑on with a westbound Jeep Wrangler.

The impact caused the Jeep to flip over. Its driver, an adult woman whose identity has not yet been released pending next of kin notification, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say Galland was impaired at the time of the crash. He was taken to Valley Regional Hospital in nearby Claremont with non‑life-threatening injuries. Early charges included aggravated driving while intoxicated; investigators have since added negligent homicide.

As of now, the investigation remains ongoing. Officials from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit are assisting the Newport Police.

Galland is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday. Investigators urge anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact the Newport Police Department at 603‑863‑3232.

For now, the community is left grappling with grief over the lost life and shock that a routine drive could end in such sudden tragedy.
