FRANKLIN, N.C. — Country music is mourning the sudden loss of Brett James, the Grammy-winning songwriter whose words and melodies defined an era of the genre. James, 57, was among three people killed Thursday afternoon when a single-engine Cirrus SR22T aircraft crashed in an open field near Iotla Valley Elementary School in Franklin, North Carolina. Officials confirmed no one on the ground was injured.

    What Happened

According to flight records, the 2016 SR22T was registered to James under his legal name, Brett Cornelius. The aircraft departed Nashville’s John C. Tune Airport shortly after 1:40 p.m. and went down before 3 p.m. Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the crash.

    Who Was Brett James

Brett James began his career as a performer but quickly established himself as one of Nashville’s most successful and sought-after songwriters. Over the years, he penned more than two dozen No. 1 country radio hits, including Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus Take the Wheel”, Dierks Bentley’s “I Hold On”, Rascal Flatts’ “Summer Nights”, as well as chart-toppers for Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, Martina McBride, and even rock band Bon Jovi.

In 2020, his achievements were honored with induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, cementing his status as one of the industry’s most influential voices.

    Legacy and Tributes

The news of James’ passing has left a deep void in the country music world. Fellow artist Dierks Bentley called James a “total legend” and reflected on their collaboration on “I Hold On” as “life-changing.” In a heartfelt Instagram post, Bentley wrote: “Rest in peace, pal. Total stud. Fellow aviator. One of the best singer-songwriters in our town.”

Fans and colleagues alike have taken to social media to share tributes, remembering James for his unmatched songwriting talent, mentorship, and lasting contributions to country music.

    Family and Next Steps

James is survived by his wife, Sandra, and their children. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. Investigators are expected to release more details in the coming weeks as they work to determine the cause of the crash.

His passing is a devastating loss for both his family and the music community, but his songs will continue to inspire and resonate for generations to come.
