The Amarillo community is reeling after a tragic crash Tuesday evening claimed the life of 65-year-old Craig Steven Long. The fatal wreck occurred around 5:39 p.m. near I-27 and Moss Lane in the Wolflin area, according to the Amarillo Police Department.

Craig was reportedly driving southbound on Canyon Drive in a Chevrolet Tahoe when — under circumstances that remain unclear — his vehicle veered off the road, descended a grassy embankment, and slammed into a parked semi-trailer inside a fenced commercial yard at 3852 Canyon Drive.

The collision was severe. First responders arrived quickly, but Craig was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials say no one else was injured.

Judge Crump of the Randall County Justice of the Peace responded shortly after the crash and ordered an autopsy to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the road. Investigation into the crash is being led by the department’s Traffic Investigation Squad.

As word of Craig’s death spread, friends and neighbors described him as a man of quiet kindness — someone who offered comfort and support to others without fanfare. The suddenness of the crash has deepened the grief, leaving loved ones scrambling for answers and the community searching for solace.

Family members now cling to memories: Craig’s warmth, the small kindnesses he offered, and the calm presence he brought to others’ lives. While there are no easy answers yet, those who knew him vow to honor his legacy by keeping alive the compassion and gentle strength he embodied.

In the days ahead, as investigators piece together what happened, the people of Amarillo are coming together — offering support, prayers, and strength to Craig’s family. In their collective grief, they hold hope that his memory will live on through the lives he touched.
