Father Charged with Murder After Infant’s Death in Mesa, Arizona

In a tragic case from Mesa, Arizona, a father has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of his 4-week-old daughter. Authorities report that Jonathan Enriquez, 22, allegedly admitted to police that he struck his baby after she was “crying too much.”

The incident occurred on July 11, when police responded to a call about a baby not breathing at an apartment complex on Covina Street. Despite efforts from first responders to revive her, the infant was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Sadly, she was pronounced dead on July 26.

Initially, it was reported that the baby choked while being fed. However, medical personnel found multiple injuries on her body, including a fractured skull, broken leg, and ribs, leading investigators to believe that the injuries were not accidental.

During interviews, both parents were questioned. Enriquez reportedly confessed to hitting his baby while she was in her bassinet. He expressed frustration over her crying, which prompted the attack, according to police statements.

As the investigation continued, doctors noted that the baby’s injuries were severe and consistent with physical abuse rather than accidents. Enriquez later claimed that some of her injuries could have come from falling out of a car seat or being hit by a seatbelt buckle.

An autopsy revealed that the nature of the baby’s injuries suggested a level of violence consistent with “slamming or crushing.” Enriquez is currently being held on a $1 million bond and has reportedly shown deep remorse for his actions.

This heartbreaking case serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking help and support in challenging parenting situations.
