Legendary actor Dick Van Dyke is preparing to celebrate a remarkable milestone: his 100th birthday on December 13. As he approaches the century mark, the beloved entertainer is reflecting on his health, his decades-long career, and a new book filled with life lessons meant for future generations.

Van Dyke shared his thoughts in a wide-ranging interview with Good Morning America, speaking with correspondent Chris Connelly from his Malibu, California, home alongside his wife, Arlene Silver.

    What Happened

Dick Van Dyke, one of Hollywood’s most enduring stars, is days away from turning 100 years old. In the interview airing Friday morning on Good Morning America, he spoke candidly about aging, staying active, and how he feels physically as he reaches this historic age.

“I’m so lucky. I don’t have any ache or pain,” Van Dyke said, noting that he still goes to the gym three times a week. He credited his wife, whom he jokingly called “a health nut,” for encouraging him to stay active and prioritize his well-being.

    Who Is Dick Van Dyke?

Dick Van Dyke is a celebrated actor, comedian, singer, and dancer whose career has spanned generations. He is best known for iconic roles in Mary Poppins, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and Bye Bye Birdie, among many others.

Over the course of his career, Van Dyke has earned multiple accolades, including Emmys, a Grammy, a Tony Award, and a Lifetime Achievement Honor. His influence stretches across film, television, theater, and music, making him one of the most respected figures in entertainment history.

    Career Highlights and Personal Reflections

Van Dyke reflected on his long career, including his unforgettable role in the 1964 classic Mary Poppins, where he performed alongside Julie Andrews in the now-iconic “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” number. He also shared memories of his early start in theater, recalling that he was just 5 years old when he played baby Jesus in a Midwest Christmas pageant.

Beyond the accolades, Van Dyke also spoke openly about more difficult chapters in his life, including his past struggles with alcohol. He said speaking publicly about it helped others.

“There was a lotta response from people who were having drinking problems who said, ‘Thank you for bringin’ it out into the sunlight,’” he said.

New Book and Advice on Living to 100

In November, Van Dyke released a new book titled 100 Rules for Living to 100, in which he shares personal wisdom and practical advice on aging well.

“I wanted to pass down some of my wisdom to the younger generations,” he explained, adding that he still had “a few more things” he wanted to say.

The book reflects his philosophy on staying physically active, maintaining humor, and embracing life with curiosity and optimism.

    Family Life and Looking Ahead

Van Dyke also credited his wife, Arlene Silver, whom he married in 2012, for helping him maintain a youthful spirit.

“She kept me young,” he said. “She gives me energy, she gives me humor, and all kinds of support.”

Silver echoed that sentiment, calling it “a privilege and an honor” to care for him and help keep him happy.

While Van Dyke admitted there are challenges to aging — including limited mobility and missing the freedom of movement and dancing — he made it clear he has no plans to slow down completely.

“The funniest thing is, it’s not enough,” he said. “A hundred years is not enough. You wanna live more, which I plan to.”
