It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Joseph Castro, a trailblazing leader in higher education who served as Chancellor of the California State University (CSU) system and as President of Fresno State University. Dr. Castro passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of vision, compassion, and unwavering commitment to student success.

    A Life Dedicated to Education

Born and raised in California, Dr. Castro’s academic journey began at Fresno State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree before completing his doctorate in education. His career spanned decades in academia, where he was celebrated as an innovative administrator and a champion of educational access.

    Transformative Leadership

As President of Fresno State, Dr. Castro expanded opportunities for underrepresented students, boosted graduation rates, and cultivated a diverse, inclusive campus. His efforts brought national recognition to the university and cemented his reputation as a collaborative, solutions-driven leader.

In 2021, he became the first Californian and first Mexican American to serve as Chancellor of the CSU system, overseeing 23 campuses and nearly half a million students. His tenure focused on enhancing educational quality, broadening student support services, and addressing inequities across the system—efforts that continued even during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Remembered for His Humanity

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Castro was beloved for his humility, accessibility, and genuine care for students, faculty, and staff. He was deeply engaged in community service, educational policy, and advocacy for underserved populations.

    Family and Legacy

Dr. Castro is survived by his spouse, children, and grandchildren. His family, along with the CSU and Fresno State communities, mourn the loss of a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and mentor.

A memorial service will be announced in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to scholarships and educational charities supporting underserved students.

Though his passing is a tremendous loss, Dr. Castro’s impact on higher education and his lifelong dedication to empowering future generations will continue to inspire for years to come.

This story is developing and will be updated as more details become available.
