Just before dawn on Friday, October 24, Phoenix was shaken by tragedy: a 32-year-old man named Miguel Alteres was struck and killed while attempting to cross 43rd Avenue just north of McDowell Road. The collision occurred around 5:45 a.m., and first responders pronounced him dead at the scene despite heroic efforts to save him.

Officers say witnesses saw a gray Jeep Cherokee hit Alteres, briefly pause, and then flee the scene. A woman was seen exiting the vehicle momentarily before getting back in and driving off — without rendering aid or checking on the victim. At first, police described the suspect as a Hispanic woman in her 40s.

An intensive investigation followed. Phoenix police canvassed area businesses, reviewed surveillance footage, and appealed for public tips. Authorities believed the front of the Jeep might show damage or traces of blood, and urged car wash employees and residents to report any suspicious activity.

By Saturday, police announced a breakthrough. A 24-year-old woman, Michelle Guzman-Garcia, was arrested in connection with the crash. She now faces charges tied to a fatal hit-and-run, though details on her motive or exact whereabouts at impact remain under investigation.

Public authorities continue to seek the cooperation of anyone with information. Witnesses or those with video are urged to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (948-6377) or 480-TESTIGO (837-8446). A $2,000 reward is being offered for tips that advance the case.

For now, the Phoenix community mourns Alberto’s sudden loss. Friends, family and neighbors are left grappling with shock and grief over a life cut short. In quiet moments, one question echoes: how could someone leave another human being lying in the street and drive off? In this case, investigators and the public alike are determined to get answers — and justice.
