A tragic accident on the A12 near Mountnessing, Essex, claimed the life of 26-year-old Tom Clark, described by his family as having “a huge heart and an immeasurable zest for life.” The driver responsible, Danny Cohen, 33, was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

    What Happened?

On Thursday, June 15, 2023, Danny Cohen was driving a white Ford Transit van when he lost control of the vehicle. The van veered across three lanes of traffic, eventually hitting a barrier and overturning. Cohen and one of his passengers were able to escape the wreckage, but Tom Clark, who was trapped inside the vehicle, tragically died at the scene, despite the valiant efforts of bystanders and emergency services.

Another passenger, who managed to exit the van, suffered serious injuries including damage to his spine, neck, and foot. He spent 12 days in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

The Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) conducted a thorough investigation into the incident, collecting testimony from multiple witnesses who reported seeing the van being driven erratically before it hit a curb or barrier, causing it to flip over.

    The Case and Sentence

At Chelmsford Crown Court, Danny Cohen admitted to causing the death of Tom Clark and causing serious injury to the other passenger. On October 23, 2025, Cohen was sentenced to five years in prison and banned from driving for nine and-a-half years.

PC Fiona Rayner of the SCIU expressed the gravity of the incident: “Danny Cohen’s reckless actions cost Tom Clark his life and left another man seriously injured. Driving is not a right, it is a privilege, and when you get behind the wheel, you have a responsibility to your passengers and other road users to be safe.”

    Tom Clark’s Legacy

Tom Clark was remembered by his family and partner for his boundless energy and kindness. His family described him as a “joyful and adventurous young man,” noting the “hundreds of personal tributes” posted online following his death. He was known for his generosity, kindness, and the support he offered to those who needed it most.

In their statement, Tom’s family said, “Tom’s generosity and kindness he extended to everyone he met is evident from the hundreds of personal tributes from around the world posted on social media since his death. He reached out to people and showed them friendship and support when everyone else had turned their backs. He will always be remembered for his huge hugs and infectious giggle.”

Though Tom’s family has expressed gratitude for the love and support they have received, they have requested privacy as they try to come to terms with the loss of their beloved son and brother.

    Community Response

This tragic incident has sparked discussions on the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of safe driving practices. Many have shared their condolences for Tom’s family and praised their resilience in the wake of such a heartbreaking loss.
