STREETER, N.D. — On the quiet morning of December 24, a head-on collision on State Highway 30 shattered the calm three miles south of Streeter, claiming the lives of two long-haul truck drivers and leaving a third person in serious condition. What should have been another routine holiday run turned into a devastating tragedy that has left families and neighbors alike struggling to make sense of the loss.

At about 8:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve, a northbound 2026 International semi-truck driven by 39-year-old Abdullahi Mohamud of Moorhead, Minnesota, veered into the path of a southbound 2025 Kenworth truck driven by Scott Schilling, 53, of Wishek, North Dakota. The impact was immediate and catastrophic. Both Mohamud and Schilling were pronounced dead at the scene.

Riding with Mohamud was a 41-year-old man from East Grand Forks, Minnesota. He survived the crash but with serious injuries. First responders airlifted him to Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck where he received urgent care. His condition remains serious, but hospital officials report he is now stable.

Local law enforcement and emergency crews from the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Logan County Sheriff’s Office, Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office, and several fire and rescue units worked tirelessly through the wreckage. Highway crews from the NDDOT also helped clear debris and secure the scene.

Because the collision blocked both directions of Highway 30, authorities closed the road for nearly six hours, rerouting traffic while investigators documented the scene and collected evidence. Troopers reported that road and weather conditions were dry at the time, ruling out ice or snow as immediate contributing factors.

Neighbors describe the stretch of Highway 30 as a familiar route used by countless drivers every day. Many in the community say they are still in shock, not only mourning the loss of two experienced drivers but also reflecting on how quickly a routine journey can turn into heartbreak. Accounts from friends recall Mohamud as a dedicated family man and Schilling as someone who loved the open road and took pride in his work.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol continues its investigation into what exactly caused the two trucks to collide head-on. Officials hope that detailed crash reconstruction and witness interviews will shed light on whether fatigue, mechanical failure, or other factors played a role. Until that work is complete, the families of Mohamud and Schilling remain in mourning, leaning on one another for support during the holidays
