Lawmakers Questioned After Encouraging Troops to Resist “Illegal Orders”

Washington D.C. – Several Democratic lawmakers are facing scrutiny after appearing in a social media video where they urged members of the U.S. military to disobey “illegal orders.” The FBI has reportedly contacted the lawmakers to schedule interviews, suggesting a potential investigation into their actions.

This development follows the Pentagon’s announcement that it is reviewing the actions of Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, also a Democrat, for possible violations of military law. These actions come after President Trump publicly criticized the lawmakers.

Critics argue that these inquiries represent an unusual escalation by federal law enforcement and military institutions, which typically avoid partisan disputes. Concerns are being raised about the administration potentially overreaching in its response to political opponents, even when those opponents are members of Congress.

In the video, the Democratic lawmakers encouraged troops to refuse unlawful orders from superiors, a principle already embedded in military duty.

Responding to the situation, a group of Democratic House members released a statement asserting that the President is misusing the FBI to intimidate members of Congress.

Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin, also featured in the video, described the FBI’s actions as a “scare tactic” employed by the President.

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski voiced her opposition to both inquiries, stating that accusing the lawmakers of treason for reminding service members of their right to refuse unlawful orders is misguided. She suggested that the Department of Defense and the FBI have more pressing matters to address than this investigation.

The FBI has not provided details on the basis for the interview requests, referring to it as an “ongoing matter.”

In the video, the lawmakers emphasized the need for troops to uphold the laws and the Constitution. Senator Kelly specifically stated that service members have the right to refuse illegal orders.

The situation has sparked debate about the balance between civilian oversight of the military and respecting the chain of command, especially in an increasingly polarized political climate.
