The quiet of a Wednesday evening in Dillon, S.C. was shattered when a fire erupted at a home on West Cleveland Street and claimed the life of 65-year-old Delphine Manning — a cherished member of the community whose loss has left neighbors and family reeling.

Fire crews from the Dillon Fire Department and officers from the Dillon Police Department responded swiftly to the residence as flames took hold and thick smoke billowed. Despite the best efforts of first responders, Manning could not be saved.

Shortly after discovery of her body inside the home, Donnie Grimsley, the Dillon County Coroner’s Office, confirmed that the victim was indeed Delphine Manning and said her remains would be sent to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for a full autopsy.

The investigation into the blaze is underway, involving the Dillon County Coroner’s Office, the Dillon Police and Fire Departments, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Officials say they’re exploring all possibilities — electrical faults, heating equipment failure, flammable materials — while speaking with neighbors and reviewing 911 call logs. So far, there is no indication of foul play.

Friends and neighbors described Manning as someone whose kindness defined her. One longtime resident, Gloria Grear, recounted the moment she discovered the tragedy: “I ran down… her mama was down on the ground. She said ‘Lord, they took my baby. My baby’s gone.’” Grear added that Delphine “is a nice, sweet person. She’ll give you the clothes off her back.”

In a heartfelt statement, Manning’s daughter, Careesa, shared the family’s pain and their gratitude that her mother is now at rest: “She was a caretaker to many… someone who would give her very last if you needed it. Though some saw her as tough, those who truly knew her experienced her sweet, tender, and giving heart.”

As the community mourns, the suddenness of the incident serves as a stark reminder of just how fragile life can be. Manning’s home was once a place of warmth and familiar laughter; now it stands as a memory of love and loss. Authorities say more details will be released once the autopsy and investigation are complete. In the meantime, friends and family remember her spirit, offer comfort to one another, and honor a woman who made her mark simply by being caring, generous, and present.
