Brendan Fraser, the acclaimed actor, recently shared some thoughts on the differences between American and Japanese culture after spending four months working in Japan.
During an appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” Fraser was asked about his return to the United States. He responded with a good-natured jab, saying, “We’re doing it wrong.” He went on to suggest that Americans could improve in areas like public transportation, manners, and even our approach to food.
Fraser’s comments come as he promotes his new film, “Rental Family,” where he plays an American in Japan’s “rental family” business. This unique service allows people to hire actors to fill emotional or social roles in their lives. The role required Fraser to immerse himself in Japanese culture.
He observed that Japanese people are often hesitant to burden others with their problems, and they tend to avoid direct “no’s,” opting for more indirect responses.
Fraser emphasized the importance of experiencing the culture firsthand. He arrived in Japan early to explore Tokyo, connect with locals, and develop his “own Tokyo story.” He found the experience incredibly eye-opening and transformative.
“Rental Family” is set to release in theaters on November 21.
