After a lengthy standstill, the Senate has agreed on a plan to reopen the government, with the House expected to vote soon.

The agreement came after some Democratic senators joined Republicans. These senators sided with Republicans to get the package to the House.

The plan involves funding the government for a short time and also includes some spending bills. The goal is to end the shutdown that has lasted for weeks.

Senator Bernie Moreno said, “We want to reopen the government.”

Some Democrats had insisted on a deal about healthcare subsidies before agreeing to reopen the government. While the final deal didn’t guarantee everything they wanted, eight Democrats decided to support the plan to move forward with the promise of a vote on the subsidies at a later date.

Senator John Thune, said there would be a vote on the subsidies and noted, “No later than the second week of December.”

The agreement also includes some wins for federal workers, such as ensuring they receive back pay.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen said this was the “best chance to reopen the government.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson has said the House will vote on the plan soon. He said, “We’re going to plan on voting, on being here, at least by Wednesday.”
