GAZA STRIP – Recent reports from Gaza indicate over 69,000 Palestinians have died during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. This information comes as both sides continue to exchange bodies as part of a fragile ceasefire agreement.
The rise in the death toll is attributed to the recovery of more bodies from the destruction caused by the war, as well as the identification of previously unrecognised remains. Israel has stated that some deaths are a result of strikes targeting remaining Hamas militants, even during the ceasefire.
Recently, Israel returned the remains of 15 Palestinians to Gaza, following the return of the remains of Israeli hostage Lior Rudaeff to Israel. These exchanges are a key component of the initial ceasefire phase, with Hamas expected to return all hostage remains quickly, and Israel releasing Palestinian remains in exchange.
The conflict began on October 7, 2023, with a Hamas-led attack on Israel that resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the taking of 251 hostages.
Sadly, attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinian farmers, activists, and journalists have been reported in the West Bank.
Gaza’s Health Ministry has stated that the total number of deaths has reached 69,169 since the conflict started. This number also includes deaths reported after their identities were confirmed.
The Israeli military reported killing two militants who approached troops in Gaza.
Palestinian health officials reported that 11 people were injured in an attack by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, amidst reports of increased settler violence. Activists have been assisting Palestinian farmers in reaching their lands for the olive harvest.
Israel’s military said that soldiers responded to a report of rock-throwing at an Israeli vehicle, leading to Israeli civilians throwing rocks at harvesters.
