Macon, GA | November 2025 – A Georgia nurse is being recognized as a hero after her quick thinking and compassionate care helped rescue a young girl from human trafficking. Tiara McCoy, a pre-op nurse at Piedmont Northside Hospital in Macon, Georgia, noticed troubling signs when a young girl arrived for surgery with an older man. Her timely intervention led to the girl’s safe return to her family and the arrest of the man accompanying her.

    What Happened?

Last year, during a routine pre-surgical checkup, McCoy began noticing red flags. The young patient, who was in for surgery, arrived with a much older man who displayed controlling behavior, such as not allowing the girl to go back for pre-surgical preparation alone. McCoy, a seven-year veteran nurse, had learned to recognize the signs of trafficking through her personal connections and training, prompting her to take immediate action.

After privately preparing the patient for surgery, McCoy discreetly asked the girl questions about potential abuse, both physical and sexual. Though initially hesitant, the patient eventually confided in McCoy, revealing that she was being trafficked. McCoy then quickly contacted her supervisor and gave the patient her personal phone to reach out to loved ones.

    Heroic Actions Lead to Rescue

When the man attempted to accompany the patient into the pre-op area, McCoy intervened. She informed the man that he was not allowed to follow the girl back and instructed him to wait. This allowed the patient to signal McCoy for help, and together they managed to keep the situation under control.

McCoy’s swift response ensured the young girl was not only kept safe but was also able to contact her family. Piedmont Healthcare confirmed that the girl was later reunited with her family in a U.S. territory, while the man was arrested for his involvement in the trafficking incident.

    Recognition for McCoy’s Bravery

For her actions, Tiara McCoy was honored with the President’s Award by Piedmont Healthcare, one of the hospital’s highest recognitions. The award was presented to McCoy last Thursday, acknowledging her courage and vigilance in rescuing the young trafficking victim.

The Importance of Recognizing the Signs of Trafficking

Clarice Carolyn Herring Jones, an anti-trafficking advocate, emphasized the importance of recognizing the warning signs of human trafficking. She pointed out indicators such as a victim’s specific body language, unusual paranoia, and the presence of “branding” tattoos. Jones also noted distress signals, like a hand gesture with four fingers raised and a tucked thumb, which can often be used by victims of trafficking to secretly communicate their distress.

    McCoy’s Message: Speak Up

McCoy, who is now in her seventh year of nursing, encourages others to follow her lead in speaking up when something seems wrong. “If you see something, say something,” she said, adding that she hopes her actions inspire others to be vigilant and take action when needed.

Her courage has not only helped rescue one young victim but also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of being aware and willing to act in the fight against human trafficking. McCoy’s actions prove that one person’s determination can make a life-saving difference.

    The Fight Continues

Tiara McCoy’s bravery and selflessness in the face of a dangerous situation have inspired both her colleagues and the community. As McCoy continues her work as a nurse, her story serves as a reminder that by speaking up and recognizing the signs of abuse, we can all play a part in making a difference and protecting those who need it most.
