PITTSBURG, Kan. — A close-knit community is reeling after 18-year-old Adam Basauri of Girard was shot and killed Friday night at Schlanger Park following a brief altercation with another youth, according to police.
It was about 8:52 p.m. on January 9 when officers from the Pittsburg Police Department, joined by firefighters and EMS crews, rushed to Schlanger Park on reports of gunfire. When first responders arrived, they found Basauri suffering from a gunshot wound. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was taken to Kansas City for an autopsy.
Investigators said the shooting stemmed from a brief fight between Basauri and a 17-year-old from Pittsburg. In the midst of that confrontation, the juvenile pulled a gun and shot Basauri. Witnesses told police the suspect left the park in a vehicle shortly after the shooting.
Deputies from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office located the suspect and the vehicle in Arma, Kansas, less than an hour later, around 9:46 p.m. The 17-year-old was taken into custody without further incident.
Police have charged the juvenile with second-degree murder. Because he is a minor, the suspect’s identity has not been released, and he is considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
Friends and family described Basauri as a bright young man with a big presence, whose sudden loss has left many grieving in the Pittsburg and Girard communities. People who knew him say his laughter and energy will be deeply missed at school gatherings, park hangouts, and family celebrations.
Officials said the investigation is ongoing and encouraged anyone with information to contact the Pittsburg Police Department. Members of the community are holding vigils and offering support to Basauri’s loved ones during this painful time.
