Goh Cheng Liang Death and Obituary – Goh Cheng Liang, the visionary entrepreneur who transformed a modest paint shop into a multibillion-dollar global coatings empire, passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. Surrounded by his family at his home, Goh’s death marks the end of an era for Singapore’s business landscape and the global paint industry.

Born in 1927 in Singapore, Goh rose from humble beginnings, growing up in a time of economic hardship. His career began after World War II, when he opened a small paint shop in 1955. Recognizing a growing demand for quality paints in the region, Goh established Wuthelam Group, which initially focused on importing and distributing paint. Over the decades, the company expanded into manufacturing and eventually formed strategic partnerships, most notably with Japan’s Nippon Paint Holdings.

Goh’s foresight, business acumen, and relentless drive turned Wuthelam into a powerhouse. In later years, his investment in Nippon Paint Holdings positioned him as its majority stakeholder, cementing his influence in the global coatings market. Under his guidance, the company expanded across Asia and into international markets, becoming one of the largest paint and coatings manufacturers in the world.

Beyond his corporate achievements, Goh was a dedicated philanthropist. In 1995, he established the Goh Foundation, which became a cornerstone of his legacy. The foundation funded cancer research initiatives, reflecting his deep commitment to healthcare advancements, and supported educational opportunities for underprivileged students in Singapore and abroad. His charitable work touched countless lives, making him a respected figure not only in business circles but also within the broader community.

Despite his immense wealth—he was consistently ranked among Singapore’s richest individuals—Goh was known for his private and humble lifestyle. He rarely appeared in public or gave interviews, preferring to focus on his work and philanthropic endeavors quietly. Those who knew him described him as disciplined, forward-thinking, and deeply devoted to his family.

Goh’s influence extended far beyond corporate boardrooms. He was regarded as a mentor by many younger entrepreneurs, who looked to his story as proof that perseverance, innovation, and integrity could overcome even the toughest odds. His contributions to Singapore’s economic development were recognized through various honors, and his companies provided thousands of jobs across the region.

He is survived by three children, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. His passing leaves a profound void in the lives of his loved ones, colleagues, and the many communities he supported through his philanthropic efforts.

Funeral arrangements will be conducted privately at the family’s request, in keeping with Goh’s lifelong preference for modesty and discretion. Tributes from business leaders, government officials, and community organizations are already pouring in, honoring a man whose life embodied the values of hard work, vision, and compassion.

Goh Cheng Liang’s journey from a small paint shop owner to the helm of an international industry leader serves as an enduring inspiration. His business legacy and charitable impact will continue to resonate for generations, ensuring that his name remains synonymous with both entrepreneurial excellence and generosity of spirit.
