Heartbreak in Midland: Step-Father Killed Teen Sons, Then Was Fatally Shot by Deputies

Midland, Ga. – A quiet November evening turned into a tragedy no one in this tight-knit Harris County community expected. On Monday around 6:50 p.m., deputies raced to a home on 103 Christophers Way after Kelly Grigsby fled to a neighbor’s house, her five-year-old in tow, calling 911 in obvious distress. She reported that her husband, Eric Grigsby, was threatening to kill her two teenage sons — a 16-year-old and a 14-year-old — and had even threatened violence against any law enforcement who came.

As deputies reached the house, the lights inside abruptly went out. Officers positioned their vehicles to cast light on the entrance, bracing for a dangerous confrontation. Through the glare of headlights, they spotted Eric walking in the driveway holding something in each hand. Despite repeated commands to drop the objects, he kept coming — and law enforcement soon realized he was holding two handguns.

Moments later, after more orders to surrender fell on deaf ears, Eric raised both weapons, pointing them at the officers. One deputy fired, striking him. He returned fire, and a volley of rounds followed until he collapsed, unresponsive.

When officers finally secured the scene and entered the house, what they found was heartbreaking. Inside the home lay the two boys: the 16-year-old was already dead, and the 14-year-old, though still alive, later died despite life-saving attempts by EMS.

Coroner Joe Weldon confirmed that all three — Eric and the two boys — died in the incident. Their names have not been released, in line with policy for minors.

Because it was an officer-involved shooting, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has stepped in to lead a full, independent investigation into what happened that night.

Sheriff Mike Jolley, speaking on behalf of his department, called it a “tragic family-violence shooting.” He said that deputies “responded to the scene and did exactly as they were trained,” and expressed deep sorrow at the loss of three lives.

Neighbors in Midland are reeling. For many, the Grigsby home was just another house on the block — but now it is the epicenter of heartbreak. Friends, family, and community members are left struggling to understand how a domestic distress call could escalate into such an unfathomable tragedy.

At this point, many questions remain: What drove Eric to threaten his stepsons? Were there prior reports of violence in the household? The GBI’s investigation will be closely watched, but for now, Midland is united in mourning — and in shock at how quickly things spiraled from a phone call to fatal gunfire.
