The close-knit community of New Castle woke up Thursday morning to tragedy after an early-morning fire ripped through a home on Good Avenue, leaving 59-year-old Gerri Black dead and her son hospitalized with serious injuries.

Fire crews from the Shenango Area Fire District arrived at the Good Avenue home shortly after 6 a.m., responding to frantic calls as flames erupted from the windows, shooting five to ten feet into the air. The heat and smoke were so intense that crews were unable to enter the home at first — they had to battle from the exterior until the worst of the blaze was knocked down.

As firefighters worked to bring the fire under control, they eventually entered the home and found Black in a bedroom, where she had perished. Officials later ruled the cause of death accidental, citing smoke inhalation and extreme heat. Her son, identified as 20-something Michael Black, managed to escape — walking barefoot to a neighbor’s house to call for help — but suffered burns to his feet and legs. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Tragically, two family cats also died in the blaze; a third survived and was taken to the Lawrence County Humane Society. Firefighters remained on scene for nearly five hours — and though the flames were extinguished after about an hour, the house was declared a total loss due to the extensive damage.

Neighbors described Black as a warm, familiar presence — the kind of person whose kindness and friendliness left a mark on everyone she met. Her sudden passing has sent waves of grief through the community. As of now, the cause of the fire remains under investigation; officials say they’re working to determine exactly what ignited the blaze.

As mourning begins, the people of New Castle are already rallying around the Black family. Offers of support, kind words, and shared memories are flowing in — a testament to how deeply one life can affect many, and how love and community can help carry people through even the darkest hours.
