The Chicago Cubs are holding a public memorial for Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg.

The public tribute will be held in Gallagher Way starting at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 22 when Cubs fans can pay their respects to Sandberg, who passed away at age 65 on July 28. His statue in monument row outside Wrigley Field had become a place for Cubs fans to gather following the news, and the team again welcomes fans to gather there for the memorial. A ticket is not required to attend.

Sandberg’s private funeral service will be broadcast on the Gallagher Way video board.

“The Cubs organization is grateful for the continued support of Cubs fans and their expression of compassion during this difficult time,” president of business operations Crane Kenney said in a statement. “Beyond his family, Ryno’s great loves were spending time with teammates and other Cubs players and interacting with Cubs fans. We hope this public tribute provides everyone touched by Ryne’s incredible talent as a player and person an opportunity to honor his legacy and pay their respects.”

The Sandberg family has asked participating fans that in lieu of flowers to bring a nonperishable food item to Gallagher Way for donation to the Nourishing Hope and Most Blessed Trinity food pantries.
